Marko Hietala-Roses From The Deep   ©2025 Nuclear Blast Records
Back in 2021 Marko released a statement that he was stepping out of both Nightwish and his public life. I'm personally very glad that he took some time for himself and eventually decided to create new music. Without that decision being made, we wouldn't be talking about his new solo album. This new album has an extremely cool vibe to it. It's not quite Nightwish or Tarot. It's heavy in places and a bit atmospheric in others. His unique vocals really stand out front, but never overshadow the songs. The album is represented visually very well. There are quite a few videos to check out on YouTube. The tracks chosen for these videos also show the bit of diversity that the album offers. This is one of my favorite albums that I have heard this year. There is a fairly unique feel to the songs and a decent balance in terms of tempo. Don't miss this one!

Blue Öyster Cult-50th Anniversary-Live In NYC-Third Night    ©2024 Frontiers Records
I have had the CD for a bit now, but really wanted to check out the Blu Ray. Finally got that and have had a chance to digest the final night of the the three nights of celebration for hitting the 50 year mark. This night offered the 'Secret Treaties' album in it's entirety and plenty of additional tracks including some of the usual tracks that they never miss.  The performances were pretty similar as the other two nights as was the guests involved. It continues to be inspiring how the band shines as a unit instead of one member taking the spotlight. 50 years is a big deal. I have been a fan since the first time I heard them around 40 years ago. They were always fairly unique and brought music that wasn't entirely predictable. Another good performance and setlist to complete an impressive trio of shows. Not sure how much longer they will go, but I'll enjoy the ride!

Dream Theater-Parasomnia  ©2025 InsideOut Music
This one is special. You knew that the return of Mike Portnoy to the band after not being a part for around a decade and a half would net great results. I personally dig most of what this band does, but I do hold a handful of albums as next level. This album will join that select group of records. The subject material on this album is interesting and I love how the band add some elements to the record that give an almost visual feel to things. The intensity is really good to. The music is disciplined yet shows what the band is capable of. The dynamics are excellent. Although Portnoy wasn't involved in the production as he was in the albums prior to his departure, you can sure feel his contribution. He adds to the chemistry and I believe is a very important piece to the Dream Theater puzzle. This album is getting a good reception and for good reason, it's excellent!

Slears-The Chaos Within   ©2024 Metalapolis Records
Slears takes awhile to get the albums to the fans, but when they do, they are typically really cool. This new record actually came out late last year, but it took me awhile to secure my copy. I didn't have access to a promo either, so I just had to wait. There was some stuff up on YouTube, but I wanted to be able to digest this album as a whole and talk about it fairly.  For those who are not familiar with this German band, they have a fairly modern hard rock sound. There are a few bands from Europe that I keep an eye on that people in the U.S. may not be familiar with. I like to try to get the word out as I feel they have something special to offer. 'The Chaos Within' to me sounds a bit like the previous record 'Turbulent Waters'. The band has evolved a bit and there are some small differences. Overall, it's another great record that will stay in my rotation for a long time!

Mantric Momentum-Alienized   ©2025 Frontiers Records
I remember really liking the band's first record released back in 2022. 'Trial By Fire' had some great melodic metal moments and I actually went back to that one recently to refamiliarize myself with it as I was about to take in the great new album 'Alienized'. Musically, the 2 albums a pretty similar. A couple of records chock full of great melodic metal songs. For those unaware, Terje Harøy who fronts this band is the frontman of Pyramaze as well. Also, he is cousins with Christer Harøy who handles a huge chunk of the musicianship in this particular band. Also represented on this album is a name a lot will know with Magnus Karlsson helping with the orchestration on the opening track. This album really offers an excellent balance of melodic and more intense elements fused together to offer some very good songs. Consistency and the music in general are great!
